Intervention Services

Basic Intervention: includes assisted reading, word study (phonics, phonological awareness, and spelling), fluency, and progress-monitoring in a developmentally appropriate model. Models include Early StepsSM, Next StepsSM, and Higher StepsSM. Time: during the school year - 2 or 4 days per week, 45 minutes per session, for a total of 90 sessions. Cost: based on a sliding scale. UURC recommendation for basic intervention is required.

Intensive Intervention based on the Wilson Reading System®: decoding, encoding, assisted reading, and progress-monitoring. Time: 2 or 3 days per week, 60-90 minutes per session. Cost: based on a sliding scale. Additional advanced assessment required. UURC recommendation and group match for advanced intervention is required.

Please note that demand for intervention services typically exceeds the UURC's capacity. When the child's name moves to the top of the recommended intervention list, a UURC staff member will contact the parent. Parents of children whose names are on the waiting list may call, email, or stop by to ask about upcoming opportunities.

Schedule: During the regular school year, UURC basic intervention typically occurs twice weekly for 45 minutes each session. Once enrolled, your child will receive a dedicated day/time slot (Monday-Wednesday 4-4:45 pm or 5-5:45pm; Tuesday-Thursday 4-4:45pm or 5-5:45pm) with a dedicated UURC-certified tutor. In some situations, four sessions per week - Monday through Thursday - will be recommended.

UURC intensive intervention schedules vary, as do summer intervention services. Please check with the UURC administrative assistant, Nikki Fellows, about possible summer services for your child.

Calendar: The UURC follows a general academic school calendar with fall, spring, and summer semesters. The UURC is closed on national holidays (i.e., Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day), as well as UEA break and Pioneer Day.

Tuition: Unlike for-profit tutoring centers, the UURC uses a sliding scale to calculate tuition according to income and family size. Please bring a copy of your most recent 1040 tax return to your first intervention session so that we may determine your rate. Tuition is paid monthly, and is due on the first tutoring session of each month.
