Home (Academic) Word Charts

  1. Click on your child's grade level in the box entitled "Word Charts for Grade:" Print.
  2. Next, look for your child's grade level in the "Word Lists" column. Look to the right and click on the list number that your child has been assigned under "Student Copy." Print. Then, click on same list for "Parent Copy." Print. You are ready to go!
  3. Follow the directions at the top of the chart. If you would like to see a demonstration video, click on the video below.

  4. If your student finishes all of the charts in a grade level, move up to the charts in the next grade level.
  5. If you have questions about which list to print, or about how to use the lists, please do not hesitate to contact our "Home Connections Coordinator" Sondra Hansen at sondra.hansen@utah.edu or 801-265-3951. An example is available here.

Please know that every time you complete a chart, your child moves closer to being able to recognize words that s/he encounters in school work. So, keep at it - even when you feel frustration and/or despair and even when your child fights you. Your child needs to know that you believe progress will happen. Keep in mind that some children need to read a word correctly 1500 times before they can recognize it accurately. UURC sessions help, but we can only work with your child on a limited basis, so we need to "be a team" for your child.

We at the UURC are glad to have you as a partner in helping your child become a more successful reader. After all, it takes a village!
